Tasers versus a hand-held self-defense weapon
Tasers have been around for many years and are quite a useful tool in its realm of expertise. I even have been associated with some of the new taser developments especially with the removable cartridge concept with tasers. I actually helped to develop that system and worked on other more advanced taser concepts. In the two years of development of our particular taser products I had the opportunity to be associated with the gentleman responsible for the invention of the taser. I got a chance to look at his "buffalo gun" which was a taser that was used to take buffalo down. Yes, that's right, a taser so powerful that it could drop a buffalo and keep it down. I even got a chance to see where the taser was used on human subjects, volunteer of course, with stunning results.
Now however, those demonstrations might have been more laboratory demonstrations when you compare the results of the taser in the field. I would suspect that most of the field experience, generally from the police department, had the desired result. We are all familiar with the Rodney King beating and he was featured three times at least. So taser's have their place in a self-defense strategy but I'm not so sure they do for the general public. One of the problems with the taser is keeping the electrical battery or the charge fresh enough to supply enough current to produce the desired result. Another problem with the taser, at leased up to recently was that they were a single shot device. However, even with the multiple shot device, you can still miss and now you're in a close quarter combat situation. Now don't get me wrong, if I had a choice of taking down my opponent at a long-range first, I would do that. However most attacks end up in close quarter battle.
A hand-held, non-electric, ready to go anytime self-defense tool or in this case your self-defense weapon, in my opinion is far superior to rely on for your personal defense. The self defense weapons, known as the defenders, come in many models, some more aggressive than others. Depending upon where you're going to go, depends on what model of defender you might want to select. There are general models, which are fully featured, and you could carry any time, anywhere, and have a very good self defense capability. In contrast to a taser, you have more than one or two shots at your attacker. This I find more beneficial to have a tool that you can continue to apply to an attacker until you get the desired result.
In conclusion, when you're faced with some choices, and quite frankly some very difficult choices, of which self-defense weapon or strategy you will apply for your life and the life of your family, make sure and do the right thing. Choose a self defense weapon that can go anywhere with you, is ready to be deployed at any moment, and allows you multiple options in your self-defense. I believe, in my 46 years in the martial arts and working with the military, this is your best self defense weapon and strategy.
